Chihuahua Students Triumph in World Robot Contest

Chihuahua, Mexico - A team of three students from Chihuahua, Mexico, have made history by winning the "DOBOT Intelligent Manufacturing Challenge - Moon Landing Challenge" at the 2025 World Robot Contest. The team, consisting of Karina Jaired Castellanos Hernández, Gabriel Enrique Ojeda Carrillo, and Luis Fernando Quintana Ríos, impressed judges with their innovative design, programming, and construction of a robotic arm that simulated a moon landing [1][3].

The students' success was made possible through the support of the Chihuahua STEM Council, an initiative under the state's Digital Policy strategy that aims to promote STEM education and nurture young talent [1]. The team was also coached by Joel Hiram López Echavarría and received engineering support from Walter Ignacio Zamarrón Estrada, Sergio Mancinas, and Lennin Rubio [1].

This victory marks a significant milestone for Chihuahua's growing robotics industry and STEM ecosystem. The state government celebrated the achievement, highlighting it as an example of how local talent, vision, and teamwork can succeed on a global stage [1].

The World Robot Contest, often referred to as the "Olympics" of robotics, attracts over 100,000 contestants from more than 20 countries since its first edition in 2015. This year's event took place in Beijing, China, from Aug. 8-12 [2].

Mexico's federal Education Ministry (SEP) and the Ibero-American STEM Academy, which operates in Mexico and across Latin America, also celebrated the students' victory [1]. The academy provided advice and training to the award-winning team [1].

The win has boosted Mexico's presence in the global robotics market, with Mexican exports of commercial robots reaching US $1.15 million through the second quarter of the year. Chihuahua led Mexican sales of commercial robots with US $922,000, followed by Jalisco with US $227,000 [4][5].
