World Children's Day Petition: Youth Advocates Push for Increased Involvement and Ten Specific Requests
Children in Need Youth Council Unveils Ten Demands for Better Participation
Children in Need, one of the largest children's rights organizations in Europe, has established a youth council that reflects the diversity of society and is taking action to implement its own projects within the organization. On September 19, 2025, the press release regarding these demands was issued in Berlin and Duisburg, Germany.
The demands focus on improving access and inclusion in education and society for Berlin students, addressing barriers related to disabilities and social inequalities to enhance their life quality and equal opportunities for schooling and social engagement. The demands include adapting legal regulations to consider the needs of students and teachers with disabilities and ensuring equal participation in school and social life.
One of the demands is for politics to give more focus to the reality of young people's lives. The young people, aged 12 to 18, will present their ten demands to the chair of the Children's Commission, Michael Hose (CDU), and Pascal Meiser (The Left) today.
In collaboration with Children in Need, Berlin students have developed a position paper demanding low-threshold access to participation formats, a reduction in the voting age, and more say in areas such as climate policy or the school system. The full details of the ten demands can be found in the Children in Need Press Release.pdf available on their official website at www.childreninneed.de.
Carsten Montag, a board member of Children in Need, stated that young people need to feel that their voice counts and can make a difference to show social and political engagement. He criticizes that participation is still too often symbolic and excludes too many young people. The demands aim to address the lack of adequate consideration given to children's right to shape their world in practice.
The press release is 169 kB in size, and the demands paper on participation can be found at https://www.childreninneed.de/demands-paper-participation. For more information about Children in Need and their work, please visit their official website at www.childreninneed.de.
