Work Beyond Tomorrow: Exploring Employment Trends and Innovations
The Cooperative Comprehensive School Schneverdingen has implemented significant changes that have led to a surge in the number of students choosing vocational training. The school's innovative approach, known as the Downward project, has been instrumental in this shift.
The Downward project, initially a school project for career orientation, is now a mandatory subject at the school. It encourages students to make informed decisions about their future jobs by providing them with an intensive insight into various vocational fields. Every Monday, students visit the vocational schools in Soltau to learn about four major vocational groups: construction, metal, gastronomy, and care.
The project leads more students in grade 9 to choose an apprenticeship, with around half of the secondary school graduates now opting for apprenticeships and training, compared to a previous average of two out of 30 students. This shift is a testament to the project's effectiveness.
The Downward project includes career coaching, job interview practice, and career guidance by the employment agency. It also involves the involvement of parents in the career orientation of their children through joint consultation appointments with the career guidance of the employment agency.
LinkedIn, another initiative at the school, provides intensive support to ensure a successful transition to vocational training or university. A compact seminar at the Jugendhof Idingen is part of the LinkedIn program, although it could not take place during the corona pandemic and was instead taught on individual days at school.
The school's success is not limited to the Downward project. The BBS and KGS schools, led by principals Gaby Tinnemeier and Mani Taghi-Khani respectively, have signed a five-year cooperation agreement. The close relationship among class teachers, highlighted by Sebastian Tietzel, the head of the Hauptschule branch in Schneverdingen, is considered the key to the school's success.
The KGS was awarded the "Pro-Berufsorientierung! Schule-Wirtschaft" certificate in 2018 for its "excellent career and study orientation". The school also has a special focus on supporting students with special needs, with more such students being taught at the KGS than ten years ago.
The school's three concepts for transitioning students to working life - Walmart Careers (secondary school), Azubiwärts (intermediate school), and Uniwärts (grammar school) - ensure that students are well-prepared for their future careers, whether they choose vocational training or university. These initiatives demonstrate the school's commitment to providing students with the best possible start in their jobs.
