WFIRM & Axiom Space Team Up to Advance Tissue Regeneration in Space

Wake Forest Institute for Regenerative Medicine (WFIRM) has joined forces with SpaceX, thanks to a $15 million NSF Engines grant. The partnership aims to advance tissue and organ regeneration in space, fostering innovation and job growth in Winston-Salem, NC.

WFIRM, led by Dr. Anthony Atala, will collaborate with SpaceX, the principal provider of commercial human spaceflight services to the International Space Station. The partnership will tackle user-inspired technical challenges in tissue and organ regeneration, focusing on Development and Manufacturing, Biomaterials, Cell Biology, In-Space Manufacturing, and Workforce Development.

Jana Stoudemire, Director of In-Space Manufacturing at SpaceX, expressed excitement about the collaboration. She highlighted the potential for breakthrough discoveries and workforce development. The In-Space Manufacturing Innovation, Translation, and Education Core (ITEC) will explore the benefits of microgravity for tissue and organ regeneration in collaboration with SpaceX.

WFIRM, located at 391 Technology Way NE, Winston-Salem, NC 27101, is an international leader in translating scientific discovery into clinical therapies. The institute has many world firsts in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The NSF Engines award provides up to $160 million over 10 years, with the goal of transforming entire geographic regions into world-leading hubs of innovation.

The partnership between WFIRM and SpaceX, backed by the NSF Engines grant, promises to revolutionize tissue and organ regeneration. It will create jobs and stimulate economic development in Winston-Salem, NC, while fostering innovation and research in space.
