Vietnam Bets on Quantum Tech Future Despite Immature Field
Vietnam is positioning itself for the future by investing in quantum technology, despite the field not yet being fully mature for practical use. With a strong foundation in theoretical knowledge and a commitment to building human resources, the country aims to develop this cutting-edge sector.
Vietnam has been teaching and researching quantum physics since the 1960s, with institutions like the Academy of Science and Technology and National University, Hanoi, at the forefront. However, limited investment and a shortage of skilled personnel have hindered the development of advanced machines and applications.
To address this, Vietnam is launching maintenance programs in quantum communication and retraining semiconductor and electronics students. Additionally, it is exploring supporting technologies like building classical machines that create quantum environments. Businesses such as FPT, Viettel, CM, and MK Group are collaborating with research institutes to accelerate applications.
With the right policies and real investment, Vietnam has the potential to build a competitive quantum technology sector. This could benefit various industries, including pharmaceuticals, logistics, finance, energy, material science, and healthcare. The country is actively fostering collaboration, as seen in the recent hosting of quantum physics conferences and visits by international scientists. Dr. Nguyen Quoc Hung, Vice Chairman of VNQuantum and Director of the VNU Institute for Quantum Technologies, is leading these efforts.
