Unwavering Principles in Action

In the bustling courthouse of Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Judge William Vodrey's office is a treasure trove of legal wisdom. The walls are adorned with law books, cards, and photographs, including a heartfelt thank you note from Oberlin College.

Judge Vodrey, a proud alumnus of Oberlin, has been serving on the Court of Common Pleas since 2011. In 2018, he was honoured with Oberlin's Alumni Medal, a testament to his distinguished career.

This summer, Judge Vodrey has taken on a new role as a mentor to Matthew Grogan, a politics major at Oberlin College. Grogan, who has demonstrated a keen interest in observing social movements within the courts, is Vodrey's summer intern.

Grogan's days are spent assisting with jury support, talking to both prosecution and defense teams, conducting legal research, and asking about the impact of the law he sees in the courtroom. His conscientiousness reflects the Obie spirit, according to Judge Vodrey.

Vodrey's legal career offers a unique path to study, as he has submitted and published more than 20 opinions as legal precedent in the state of Ohio. One of his judgments was even cited by the Solicitor General of the U.S.

Grogan's internship with Judge Vodrey is not his first foray into the world of law. During the Winter Term, he interned for the Washington Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs.

Meanwhile, Career Exploration & Development at Oberlin continues to help students like Grogan find summer internships and professional opportunities aligned with their career goals. The service offers one-on-one advising, on-campus panel discussions, and networking events.

For Judge Vodrey, giving back to Oberlin is important. He believes that Obies understand the need for the country to be true to its principles and live up to its potential. He serves as an adjunct professor in legal advocacy at Oberlin College, further cementing his connection to the institution.

Despite not having information on who currently holds the position of Chief Justice of the Cuyahoga County Supreme Court, one thing is clear: Matthew Grogan's time at Oberlin is putting him on the path to law school, and his internship with Judge Vodrey is a significant step towards that goal. Grogan has shown Vodrey that there are immediate impacts of law, and by being a practitioner, his impact ripples out.
