United States' and Worldwide's Tomorrow Belongs to Us All!
The Free University of Berlin is set to host a four-day event, "StudentUni Sustainability + Climate Protection," from September 22 to 25, 2025. This educational programme, open to students from grades 5 and 6 and their teachers from all 12 Berlin districts, aims to foster an understanding of sustainability and climate protection through engaging workshops and experiences.
The event's theme, "Experience Sustainability with All Senses," encapsulates the immersive nature of the workshops, which cover a wide range of topics related to sustainable development. These workshops, numbering approximately 67, will take place in various locations on the university campus, including laboratories, community gardens, and the Botanical Garden.
The programme offers a unique opportunity for students to learn about the benefits of renewable energy and sustainable consumption and lifestyle from different perspectives. Through experiments with sun, biomass, water, and wind power, as well as in art, theatre, and philosophy workshops, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of complex connections and backgrounds to the topics of climate, species, and resource protection.
In addition to the workshops, the StudentUni programme includes free professional development for teachers, seminars for teacher training students, and training for trainers around the cross-cutting task "Education for Sustainable Development." This aspect of the programme aims to promote the teaching and learning culture "Education for Sustainable Development" in schools and universities.
The event's supporters include Berliner Sparkasse, Deutsche Umwelthilfe, Stiftung Naturschutz Berlin, and the Free University of Berlin, among others. These partners' support demonstrates their commitment to the cross-cutting themes of climate protection, resource and biodiversity protection, and the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the Agenda 2030.
Approximately 1,500 schoolchildren from all Berlin districts are expected to attend the event. The workshops help students develop solutions and alternatives for everyday life related to sustainability and climate protection. Among the workshops are "Water Cycle - Exploring the Water Cycle," "DIY Bioenergy," "Climate Change Research & Understanding," "Renovation Instead of Demolition - Designing a Future-Proof House," "Upcycling Made Easy," "My Future, Your Future, Our Future," and "My Dream Neighborhood - Designing Urban Spaces."
The StudentUni programme has been supported by the Berliner Wasserbetriebe, the Berliner Stadtreinigung, and the Free University of Berlin for many years. This event takes place twice a year at different locations on the university campus, making it an annual fixture in Berlin's educational calendar.
The StudentUni Sustainability + Climate Protection event promises to be an enriching experience for all participants, providing a platform for young minds to explore questions about future living, consuming, and business, climate-friendly city building, and biodiversity promotion.
