UCLA's Herb Alpert School of Music unveils the Winter-Spring 2018 Lecture Series, featuring eminent speakers.
The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music is set to host a Distinguished Lecture Series in the Winter-Spring of 2018, focusing on advanced topics in music history and musicology. The lineup for the seventh annual series includes esteemed UCLA professors Robert Fink, Jessica Holmes, and Uri McMillan, along with guest scholars Beth Levy, Stephan Pennington, Phil Ford, Robynn Stilwell, Vijay Iyer, Donna Hope, and dancehall innovator Latonya Style.
The series promises to address a range of topics, including intersectionality, Ernie Kovacs' early television work, magical and occult styles of thought, and a mini-symposium on Jamaican popular music and dance. Phil Ford, a musicologist, is set to present a talk on "magical hermeneutics" and its potential value for music analysis.
Notable events in the series include Phil Ford's talk on April 5, Vijay Iyer's lecture on April 26, and a mini-symposium on Jamaican popular music and dance, titled "Dancehall Moves," on May 17-18. Donna Hope, a dancehall scholar, and Latonya Style, a dancehall innovator and creator of "Stylish Moves," will present a lecture, joint Q&A, seminar, and dance workshop during the mini-symposium.
The topics of the lecture series also include a lecture by Robynn Stilwell on the early television work of Ernie Kovacs, scheduled for February 15, and a lecture titled "Music, Canon and Identity: Pedagogical Perspectives" on January 25, 2018.
