U.S. Congressional Records Now Easier to Explore with New Resources
The Center for Legislative Archives has published a wealth of resources to aid researchers in exploring U.S. congressional records. Spanning from 1789 to 1989, these guides and aids cover both the House and Senate, as well as joint committees.
The Center has produced comprehensive guides for the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, detailing jurisdiction, history, and records of each committee during this period. Additionally, they've created a guide specifically for joint committees, which have membership from both the House and Senate.
To assist with legislative research, the Center has published a three-part introductory series through History Hub. They also provide detailed guidance on citing congressional records, with Chapter 1 of their House and Senate Guides dedicated to this topic.
The Center's commitment to accessibility is evident in their provision of finding aids and preliminary inventories for selected records, available both in their research room and on the National Archives Catalog. Most of their holdings are described in the catalog, with many digitized copies and born-digital records accessible online.
The Center for Legislative Archives continues to expand its resources, featuring various digitized documents in their Featured Documents section. Whether you're a seasoned researcher or just starting, these guides and aids make exploring U.S. congressional records a more navigable journey.
