Türkiye's School Life Expectancy Drops to 17.2 Years in 2024
Türkiye's education department landscape has seen shifts in 2024, with varying school life expectancies across provinces and between genders. The longest schooling was expected in Karabük and Istanbul at 19 years, while the shortest was seen in Şanlıurfa and Şırnak at 14.4 years.
Provincial disparities in education were evident. Boys had the highest school life expectancy in Bayburt, while girls led in Tunceli. Overall, the expected years of schooling in Türkiye declined from 17.9 years in 2023 to 17.2 years in 2024. This includes 1.5 years of pre-primary education and 11.9 years through the end of secondary school.
Gender parity improved, with the index rising to 1.05 in 2024 from 0.97 in 2018. Iğdır, Tunceli, and Bartın showed the highest parity, while Şanlıurfa, Bitlis, and Siirt had the lowest. Other provinces with high school life expectancy included Bayburt, Ankara, Rize, Erzincan, and Tunceli. Meanwhile, the overall school life expectancy for boys dropped to 16.7 years, and for girls, it declined to 17.6 years.
In 2024, Türkiye's school life expectancy varied significantly by province and gender. While some regions like Karabük and Istanbul saw high expectancy, others like Şanlıurfa and Şırnak had lower figures. Gender parity improved, but regional disparities persist. Further efforts are needed to ensure equal educational opportunities across the country.
