Trump Escalates US-China Rivalry, Refuses to Extend Nuclear Arms Deal Without China

President Trump has escalated tensions with China, refusing to extend the nuclear weapons reduction agreement with Russia unless China is involved. This move, seen as a delaying tactic by Russia, comes amid a backdrop of increasing US-China rivalry and a shift in US foreign policy towards a more competitive approach.

Trump's stance on China predates the Coronavirus pandemic and has whipped up broad public opinion against China, with both Democrats and much of the media following suit. This antagonism is rooted in Trump's belief that China is a strategic competitor, a view shared by China, which sees itself as the world's leading power.

The US has the most non-tariff barriers against foreign goods, with China ranking fifth. This economic rivalry is compounded by military tensions. Both countries believe they are the world's leading power and have an extreme superiority complex. China, with a population four times that of the US, is catching up to the US in income per head and high technology in many areas.

Trump's case against China regarding the Coronavirus, military posture, and trade has been criticized as exaggerated and counterproductive. Unlike the US, which pushes for democracy and human rights, China lets others come to seek its ideas. The US, seeking to prevent the emergence of a 'peer competitor', has targeted China's rise, with 72 attempts at regime change around the world compared to China's last war in 1979.

The US-China rivalry, fueled by Trump's policies, shows no signs of abating. Both nations must navigate their differences carefully to prevent further escalation and maintain global stability.
