Thousands Demand New Agricultural Policy at Berlin's Green Week
Thousands gathered in Berlin at the start of Green Week to demand a new agricultural policy. The demonstration, led by a coalition of over 50 organizations, called on the SPD and Union to take immediate action against industrial agriculture's harmful effects on farmers, the environment, and climate.
The 'Wir haben es satt!' demonstration, which translates to 'We're fed up!', saw 33,000 people unite against the agricultural industry. The coalition, coordinated by groups like Slow Food and Brot für die Welt, stressed that their protest was not against farmers but the current industrial practices.
The demonstration was a response to the problems caused by industrial agriculture, including harm to farmers, climate change, animal welfare, and environmental degradation. The coalition proposed concrete projects such as mandatory labeling of animal products, a ban on reserve antibiotics, and fair market rules. They also aimed to stop EU agricultural subsidies from going to non-agricultural investors buying land from farmers.
The demonstration coalition called on the SPD and Union to take the first steps towards change by banning glyphosate and restructuring animal husbandry. They demanded respect for human rights, fair trade conditions, and more support for rural populations worldwide. The coalition's ultimate goal is a shift towards an environmentally, animal-, and climate-friendly agricultural model.
