The Power of Insight: Mathew Knowles' Tale of Resilience and Advocacy

Throughout his successful journey, Matthew Knowles has held various titles such as writer, business mogul, parent, motivational speaker, and now, advocate. His impressive achievements in the music and business sectors serve as a compelling example of what can happen when hard work, passion, and commitment collide. Previously, he openly discussed the nuances of these industries, and now, he's sharing his personal story as a survivor of male breast cancer with the BRCA2 gene mutation. Recently, he partnered with AstraZeneca to promote the BeBRCAware campaign, which stresses the significance of genetic testing─an aspect he consistently promotes through his platform.

"I'm grateful to have a platform that allows me to spark more awareness due to its fundamental importance, which revolves around early detection and knowledge," said Knowles. "This ties in with my efforts to disseminate information related to the significance of genetic testing for both men and women. Knowledge is a powerful weapon."

Upon learning that he had the BRCA2 gene mutation, Knowles admittedly knew little about genetic testing. The discovery motivated him to research and educate himself further.

"I was clueless about genetic testing; my knowledge was quite limited. I underwent surgery, and my surgeon suggested a test during operation. I later received a call to visit his office, where he disclosed that the test was, in fact, a genetic test, and I tested positive. This meant an increased risk for those testing positive, although it doesn't guarantee the development of the disease. For men, it implies a higher probability of male breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and prostate cancer, specifically concerning me. Upon receiving this information, I was taken aback. As a research enthusiast and knowledge seeker, I delved deeper into genetic testing and forged a partnership with AstraZeneca as an ambassador."

Knowles' diagnosis prompted him to not only educate himself on genetic testing but also to embrace healthier lifestyle habits, including regular exercise and diet modifications. He also emphasizes the importance of acknowledging and discussing mental and emotional struggles with healthcare providers.

"It resulted in a lifestyle shift for me, and I embodied it by altering my diet, exercising, and shedding 30 pounds. I continue to aim for another 10. Yesterday, I completed my two-mile walk in 45 minutes, and I endeavor to walk for two miles every other day. During the pandemic, I recognized the necessity of communicating with my therapist due to my fear of male breast cancer coupled with the uncertainty brought on by COVID-19. There's a mental and emotional toll associated with any cancer, including men, so it's vital to share pertinent information with your physician to explore potential targeted treatments."

As he continues to advocates for the awareness of the BRCA2 gene mutation and genetic testing, Knowles stresses the importance of men embracing their vulnerability to seek assistance in dealing with health issues.

"Our vulnerability is our safety. Men should recognize this. Whenever I address crowds, I express that my vulnerability lies in my safety. Vulnerability also encompasses the courage to concede the need for assistance. As men, we tend to postpone visiting the doctor until it's absolutely necessary, especially in the case of Black men, who are experiencing some of the highest mortality rates due to delayed treatment. I was acutely aware of the necessity to consult with my therapist to navigate my emotional responses to breast cancer."

After learning about his positive BRCA2 gene mutation, Matthew Knowles partnered with AstraZeneca to promote the "BeBRCAware" campaign, emphasizing the significance of genetic testing. Despite being clueless about genetic testing initially, Knowles now strongly advocates for its importance to both men and women due to its potential for early detection.
