The flood struck swiftly, with the Guadalupe River rising a staggering 26 feet in just 45 minutes. Panic ensued as families scrambled to safety. Mike and Charlene Harber are still missing after their children, Blair, 13, and Brooke, 11, were washed away and found dead 12 hours later.
Dick Eastland, 70, lost his life trying to save several young girls from the rising waters. He was one of many heroes that day. Teenage camp counselors also played a crucial role, helping young children escape to higher ground. Scott Ruskan, 26, managed to save 165 victims who had been swept away by the flood.
The flood has had a profound impact on the community, with at least 28 children, mostly young girls, losing their lives. In the aftermath, various organizations, including local emergency services and Texas A&M University's Project CLARKE, have mobilized to assist and collect donations. Catholic Charities USA is among those accepting donations to support the affected people.
