Tech Giant Removes Over 50 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Nonprofits from a Funding Index List

In a recent development, Google has removed over 50 nonprofit organizations focused on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) from its funding list. This move, part of its largest reduction of supported groups in at least five years, has raised eyebrows and sparked debate.

According to a report by the Tech Transparency Project, the removed organizations had mission statements that included terms like "diversity," "equity," "inclusion," "race," "activism," and "women." Some of the organizations that were removed include the National Network to End Domestic Violence, the African American Community Service Agency, and the Latino Leadership Alliance.

Google's spokesperson, José Castañeda, discussed the report with CNBC. He stated that the changes in the list reflect contributions made in 2024 by Google's US Government Affairs and Public Policy team. However, the reasons for the removals are unclear. Google stated that its contributions vary each year based on impact, without specifying reasons for the removals.

It is worth noting that Google had previously removed references to DEI from official reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission and ended diversity-related hiring goals during the Trump presidency. This suggests that the move away from DEI initiatives may be influenced by political pressures.

However, the broader perspective emphasizes that DEI is a strategic business advantage and not a liability. Several major companies and executives affirm that inclusive policies improve trust, talent retention, and financial performance. Legal authorities have also confirmed that DEI programs comply with state and federal laws.

Google's Chief People Officer Fiona Cicconi announced an update in February, stating that Google staff will be evaluating and updating programs, trainings, and initiatives related to DEI. It remains unclear whether the removal of certain organizations from the list is related to these updates or if Google has ended its funding for these organizations entirely.

The updates in Google's DEI programs are also being reported by The Guardian and Business Insider. Google's staff is currently working on evaluating and updating programs, trainings, and initiatives related to DEI. The company's stance on DEI remains to be seen as these updates unfold.
