Study underscores the significance of nighttime businesses and activities

In a bid to shed light on the current trends, improvement opportunities, and funding possibilities in the nighttime economy, a comprehensive study titled "NightLÄND" has been conducted. Commissioned by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Tourism Baden-Württemberg, this study was carried out by Prognos.

The importance and potential of the nighttime business, particularly in attracting highly qualified professionals, has been emphasised by Dr. Patrick Rapp, State Secretary in the same ministry. He underscores the indispensable role of a multifaceted nighttime economy in enhancing the quality of life in Baden-Württemberg.

A vibrant city centre, according to the study, necessitates an active nightlife scene. The nighttime economy offers a platform for interactions, fosters cultural diversity, social cohesion, and significantly contributes to tourism.

Interestingly, the Stuttgart region in Baden-Württemberg has been identified as having the highest potential and networking opportunities for developing and implementing a vibrant nighttime economy sector. The study provides 12 recommendations for strengthening the nighttime economy.

Nighttime businesses can enhance their resilience by adapting their business models and offerings to changing needs and reaching new target groups. The study highlights the significance of the nighttime economy for making a location more attractive for businesses, more livable for people, and more interesting as a tourism destination.

The nighttime economy encompasses a wide range of establishments such as bars, restaurants, clubs, theaters and cinemas, festivals, open-air events, live concerts in small clubs, and culinary experiences in restaurants with late-night dining. Over 220,000 people are employed in these sectors in Baden-Württemberg, generating approximately 9 billion euros in annual turnover.

The study provides concrete examples of how to develop and implement a good nighttime economy. It also serves as a basis for local strategy development and implementation in the nighttime economy.

To improve the nighttime economy, the study suggests reducing bureaucratic hurdles and networking with neighbouring industries such as hotels, daytime gastronomy, or tourism. The nighttime economy has a significant impact on the well-being of both businesses and the population.

For the first time, the study provides numbers on "life after eight" for the whole country. A diverse range of evening and nighttime events, meeting places, and gastronomic offerings are crucial for the economy, society, and tourism, day and night.

The "NightLÄND" study focuses on various aspects of the nighttime economy, including unique characteristics, guest origins, a typical night's itinerary, the role of "Night Governance," and challenges faced. This comprehensive study is now accessible at this link.
