Alyssa Griffin: Investigating the Impact of Ocean Acidification on Coral Reefs

Alyssa Griffin, a PhD student at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), is making waves in the field of marine chemistry and geochemistry. Her research focuses on the impact of ocean acidification on coral reefs, a pressing issue that is gaining global attention.

Griffin's typical day is a whirlwind of activities. She spends her time running experiments in the lab, analyzing data on the computer, helping labmates and fellow students, teaching, reading papers, or writing. Despite the demanding schedule, Griffin's passion for her field is evident.

Coral reefs, home to a quarter of all marine life, are under threat due to increasing ocean acidity. This acidity makes it more difficult for corals to build their mineral skeletons, which are made of calcium carbonates, similar to bones in the human body. Griffin's research investigates how much and how quickly these sediments will dissolve under current and future ocean conditions.

Griffin's research is not just about numbers and data. It's about understanding the intricate balance of our oceans and the creatures that call them home. As much as 95% of seafloor coverage on a reef can be comprised of coral skeletons, providing structure and stability to these delicate ecosystems.

Griffin's journey in marine chemistry and geochemistry began at Temple University, where she honed her skills as a scientist and developed a passion for her field. At UCSD, she is guided by Dr. Andreas Andersson, her advisor at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.

Griffin's most rewarding part of doing research is being able to ask "Why?" and navigating the path to an answer. She hopes to continue performing geochemical research of anthropogenically-driven changes in Earth's processes in the future, conducting her work within an academic institution to generate greater public interest in science.

In addition to her research, Griffin is one of Scripps Oceanography's Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Fellows. She organizes events aimed at fostering a more inclusive and diverse environment, reflecting her commitment to making science accessible to all.

Despite the challenges in balancing her work-life priorities, Griffin remains dedicated to her research and her mission to protect our oceans. Her work is a testament to the power of curiosity, determination, and the pursuit of knowledge.
