School Safety: Authorities Remind Parents and Drivers in Schleswig-Holstein

As the new school year 2025/2026 begins on Monday (08.09.2025) in Schleswig-Holstein, authorities are reminding parents and drivers about safety measures to protect young ones on their way to school.

To ensure safer behaviour, authorities advise parents to practice the route to school with their young ones and avoid morning rushes. Children should only be allowed to ride bicycles to school after passing the bicycle test in the 4th grade. In the coming days, there will be increased speed checks near schools and school routes.

Authorities, including local police departments and municipal traffic surveillance units, are responsible for enforcing traffic regulations and ensuring child safety. Parents are urged to use appropriate child seats and restraint systems in cars, and to park only in permitted places. Dressing children in bright or reflective clothing, especially in the dark season, can make them more visible to drivers. Arranging for children to travel to school in small groups can also enhance safety. Letting children walk a short distance before school promotes independence and helps prevent unclear traffic situations. Drivers are legally obliged to behave in a way that does not endanger children in road traffic, as children may not accurately estimate distances and speeds and may behave unpredictably.

As the new school year begins, it is crucial for parents and drivers to prioritise child safety on the roads. By following these guidelines, we can help ensure that young ones arrive at school safely and ready to learn.
