Schneverdingen Event Spotlights Femicides: Urgent Calls for Legislation and Support

Schneverdingen recently hosted a thought-provoking event focused on femicides, with local officials, support system actors, and the public in attendance. The event, organized by the town's equal opportunities officer Agnes Klör, featured a presentation by Carolin Haentjes, author of 'Femicides - Women Murders in Germany', and addressed crucial aspects of this pressing issue.

Haentjes presented case studies of ordinary women and men in unhealthy relationships that escalated to femicides. She highlighted striking similarities between femicide dynamics and those of school shooters, with both often exhibiting a high 'pressure to act' and 'overkill'. Meike Moog-Steffens, Snowden's mayor, emphasized the urgent need for legislation to reduce violence against women.

Andre Ricci, a Correctiv editorial team member specializing in individualization and demography, noted that the common patriarchal mindset groups femicide perpetrators, despite their individual differences. Attendees also criticized the strengthened right of access, which allows problematic men quick contact with children and mothers in shelters. Contrary to popular belief, Ricci explained that femicide is typically a planned crime, not an extreme escalation of domestic violence. However, there's a gap in the local support system, with a lack of contact points for violent men seeking to change their behavior.

The event in Schneverdingen underscored the complexity and urgency of femicide as an issue. It highlighted the need for better understanding, legislation, and support systems to prevent and address femicides. By bringing together local officials, support system actors, and the public, the event fostered crucial dialogue and awareness around this critical topic.
