In the heart of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, the company Reko is making waves by providing company apartments for young Rwandan apprentices. This initiative is part of the "Spa(n)nende Perspektiven" project, an endeavour that connects German companies with Rwandan youths seeking vocational training opportunities.

Denys Ntegerejumukiza, a Rwandan apprentice, began his journey at Reko after completing his civil engineering studies in his home country. Initially, Denys felt apprehensive about the foreign environment, but he soon found the company and its people to be welcoming.

Reko's participation in the "Spa(n)nende Perspektiven" project has proven to be a solution to the company's challenge in finding suitable apprentices. The competition among companies in Dörth and demographic changes have made the selection process more challenging. However, Reko's rigorous selection process, which requires applicants to prove their German language skills and technical knowledge, ensures that only the most qualified candidates are chosen.

The "Spa(n)nende Perspektiven" project has yielded positive results. So far, only one Rwandan apprentice has completed his apprenticeship, with Denys Ntegerejumukiza being the first. Despite finishing with a reduction in school grades, Denys' dedication and eagerness to learn have shone through.

Reko offers additional support to its Rwandan apprentices, providing employer loans for them to obtain a German driving license. This initiative not only makes daily commuting easier but also equips them with a valuable skill for future employment.

Personnel officer Carina Landau plays a crucial role in supporting the Rwandan apprentices, accompanying them to offices and banks initially. Landau believes that the company has predominantly positive experiences with the project.

Denys, like many of his fellow Rwandan apprentices, is eager to learn and already thinking about further training during his apprenticeship. He hopes to return to Rwanda one day and start his own business, utilising the skills and knowledge he has gained in Germany.

As the training start for 2025 approaches, many companies in Rhineland-Palatinate, including Reko, still have unfilled apprentice positions. The "Spa(n)nende Perspektiven" project continues to offer a unique opportunity for German companies to contribute to the development of Rwandan industry while also fostering cross-cultural exchange.

While specific details about the project's structure, partners, and outcomes can be found in official sources or the organisation managing the project, it is clear that initiatives like the "Spa(n)nende Perspektiven" project are paving the way for international cooperation in vocational training.
