Russia Launches New Road Safety Strategy to Tackle Right-Hand Drive Risks
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia has launched a new Road Safety Strategy project. It aims to tackle the risks posed by right-hand drive cars, which were involved in 12.2% of all Russian road accidents in 2024. The project plans to develop educational activities and enhance driver training, without proposing any vehicle bans.
In 2024, there were 16,077 road traffic accidents involving right-hand drive cars, marking a 0.9% increase from the previous year. The project seeks to address this growing concern. Andrei Kutepov, Chairman of the Federation Council Committee, has proposed measures to stimulate the replacement of right-hand drive vehicles with left-hand drive ones. However, the Ministry of Internal Affairs does not support restrictions on right-hand drive cars.
The project aims to increase safety when driving right-hand drive vehicles and adapt them to Russia's road infrastructure. It does not mention any bans. Instead, it focuses on education and training. There are approximately four million right-hand drive cars in Russia, predominantly operated in the Far Eastern and Siberian federal districts. The increase in imports from Eastern countries has contributed to this figure and the subsequent rise in accidents.
The new Road Safety Strategy project targets the risks associated with right-hand drive cars. It plans to develop educational activities and improve driver training, aiming to enhance safety without proposing any vehicle bans. The project responds to the 0.9% increase in accidents involving right-hand drive cars in 2024, highlighting the need for targeted road safety measures.
