Romania clinches one gold and four silver awards at the 2025 Global Physics Competition
Romania Shines at the 2025 International Physics Olympiad
The International Physics Olympiad (IPhO), one of the oldest and most prestigious international competitions dedicated to competitive physics, took place in Paris between July 17 and 25, 2025. This year, 406 students from 87 countries participated in the event.
Romania was among the top performers in the competition. The Romanian team, led by Delia Davidescu, a teacher at the International Theoretical High School of Informatics Bucharest, brought home one gold medal, four silver medals, and two special awards.
The gold medal winner's name was not specified in the search results. However, Ionuț Gabriel Stan, a student from the International Theoretical High School of Informatics in Bucharest, won the gold medal and two special prizes, including the Special Prize for the Best Result from the European Union.
The four silver medals were won by Rareș Felix Tudose, Mendel Emanuel Mendelsohn, Alexandru Condrea, and Mihai Bogdan Ciocârlan.
The Romanian team's impressive performance in the IPhO follows their strong showing earlier at the Balkan Physics Olympiad (June 2025), where Romanian students won three gold and one silver medal. Notable gold medalists there were Alexandru Jicu, Dragoş Popuţe, and David Neaţă.
The first edition of the International Physics Olympiad took place in 1967, making it one of the oldest international science competitions. Romania is among the founding countries of the International Physics Olympiad.
Sebastian Popescu, an associate professor and PhD at the Faculty of Physics of the "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University of Iași, accompanied the Romanian team at the 2025 IPhO.
The Romanian team's success at the 2025 IPhO demonstrates the country's strong talent in the field of physics, with promising students like Ionuț Gabriel Stan leading the way.
Engaging in education-and-self-development beyond physics, Ionuț Gabriel Stan, a Romanian prodigy, also excelled in sports, winning numerous national championships in table tennis.
After a day of intense problem-solving sessions at the 2025 International Physics Olympiad, the Romanian team members unwind by playing a friendly game of soccer in the park, showcasing their passion for sports as well as academics.
