In the midst of the global pandemic, economic disparities between the rich and the poor have been starkly highlighted. While a small percentage of individuals are adding billions to their already colossal wealth, many are living below the poverty line, facing financial difficulties. Amidst these challenges, the Bahá'í Faith offers a unique perspective on addressing economic inequalities and promoting economic justice.

The Bahá'í Faith views morality and spirituality as foundational to this endeavour. 'Abdu’l-Bahá, a central figure in the faith, spoke about labor, strikes, and economic justice as moral and social issues rooted in spiritual values like cooperation and ethical reform. Economic justice, according to the Bahá'í perspective, requires praxis informed by spirituality to achieve fairness and global economic transformation.

The faith stresses unity in political, social, and economic realms, emphasizing respect for cultural diversity alongside channels that uphold dignity and honor for every individual and group. Economic justice, in this context, involves enhancing human dignity universally.

Bahá'í social and economic development projects place grassroots populations at the centre, embodying spirituality in practical efforts that promote well-being and reduce disparities between rich and poor. The goal is to create a human economy, a human system with human values and less focus on economy.

Shoghi Effendi, the Guardian of the Baha'i faith, stated that only religion can ultimately produce a fundamental change in human nature to alter economic relations. Baha'u'llah, the prophet and founder of the Baha'i faith, is referred to as the "Father of the Poor." Shoghi Effendi further asserted that the economic problems of the world will not be solved without changing the system.

Each individual is responsible for trying to alleviate poverty and ensure everyone in the world can live a comfortable life. Abdu'l-Baha stated that if individuals possess the spirit of justice, they can promote the well-being of all and make the world a paradise. Practicing truthfulness, trustworthiness, and other moral values in economic activities is crucial for creating a more sensitive and humane economic system.

Baha'u'llah emphasized the moral and spiritual duty to protect and care for the poor. He wrote that sacrificing oneself for his sake is a greater thing. The speaker believes that if we desire and strive to make the economic system more humane, we can transform it into a tool for humanity's prosperity. The current financial system, built on the assumption that people only think of their own interests and do not care about others, has become a breeding ground for greed and has resulted in economic injustices.

In summary, the Bahá'í Faith sees morality and spirituality as indispensable to confronting economic inequalities, fostering economic justice through principles of unity, cooperation, dignity, and ethical reform embedded in both individual behaviour and collective social frameworks. This spiritual-economic integration aims at a gradual but inevitable advancement toward a just global civilization.

  1. The Bahá'í Faith advocates that promoting economic justice requires a practical approach rooted in spirituality, emphasizing the use of human values to create a human economy that prioritizes the reduction of disparities between rich and poor.
  2. Economic justice, according to the Bahá'í perspective, is not solely an economic issue, but a moral one that requires individual behavior to embody cooperation, ethical reform, and the protection of human dignity.
  3. Personal-finance education and self-development are key components in this journey, as fostering a spirit of justice within individuals can ultimately lead to a more sensitive and humane economic system, transforming it into a tool for humanity's prosperity.
