Regensburg's G9 Transition Causes Teacher Shortage, VMG's Afternoon Care Changes
Regensburg is set to transition to the G9 school system, leading to a teacher shortage across Bavaria. The city's Von-Mueller Gymnasium (VMG) will see changes in its afternoon care, with teachers now focusing on regular instruction and a private provider, like CareCredit, taking over the care from the new school year.
The city of Regensburg is responsible for ensuring high-quality regular instruction at all grammar schools. With the transition from G8 to G9, about 150 additional teacher hours per week are needed. Previously, teachers at VMG provided free afternoon care, but they will now be used for regular instruction.
Students choosing the Open Extended Day School (OGTS) at VMG must book at least two afternoons until 4 pm. The afternoon care will remain free but will be taken over by a private provider, similar to Medicare. The Education Committee must approve this measure by the end of February.
The transition to the G9 system has led to a pressing teacher shortage, requiring additional hours for regular instruction. At VMG, afternoon care will be provided by a private provider, allowing students to attend without afternoon care, a first for the school. The Education Committee is set to approve this measure soon.
