Redefine patent evaluation through coding innovations: Join the 4th CodeFest and revolutionize the industry

The European Patent Office (EPO) has announced the launch of the fourth edition of its CodeFest competition, with a deadline for proposals on 16 November 2025. This annual event invites individuals and teams of up to five members to participate, including EPO staff, external entrants, or a combination of both.

The competition is of particular interest to patent professionals, IT and AI specialists, economists, legal and IP experts, data enthusiasts, developers, coders, data scientists, and professionals from international organizations, academia, and research institutions. The aim is to create code-driven solutions for assessing the value of patents, with the ultimate goal of supporting smarter investment decisions and improving the management of intellectual property (IP) portfolios.

In line with the EPO's efforts to promote diversity and inclusion, women with an enthusiasm for technology and innovation are highly encouraged to take part. To ensure high-quality and relevant CodeFest submissions, participants are encouraged to form multidisciplinary teams.

The challenge is to use data analytics to transform complex patent data into actionable insights. Participants are invited to develop automated systems that use EPO tools like the Technology Intelligence Platform to assess the economic value of patents. To help contestants in this endeavour, the EPO will provide participants with free access to the world's largest patent data collection and EPO patent knowledge products and services, including the Technology Intelligence Platform, during the second round of the competition.

Proposals for the CodeFest competition should include an outline of the proposed approach, data selection, possible model implementation, and model evaluation. Participants are encouraged to include how their proposed application can benefit users in their proposals.

The prizes for the competition are as follows: Grand prize winner - EUR 20 000, First runner-up - EUR 10 000, Second runner-up - EUR 5 000. To register for the CodeFest 2026 competition, visit the CodeFest 2026 page.

The EPO aims to support startups and inventors in securing funding and scaling sustainably within Europe's innovation ecosystem. By participating in CodeFest 2026, you could be one step closer to making a significant impact in the world of patent analytics and contributing to the growth of Europe's innovation ecosystem.
