Recognition Bestowed for Academic Purity Devotees Among Faculty Members, Celebrating Their Service and Impact

In a ceremony recognising outstanding service, Aileen Gallagher and Laura Lisnyczyj were awarded the Academic Integrity Outstanding Service Awards at Syracuse University. The duo has been commended for their significant contributions to maintaining and promoting the university's academic integrity standards.

Aileen Gallagher, an associate dean for academic affairs in the Newhouse School of Public Communications, has demonstrated her leadership in academic matters, including academic integrity initiatives. Gallagher served as the academic integrity coordinator for the Newhouse School during the 2024-25 academic year.

On the other hand, Laura Lisnyczyj, an assistant teaching professor of languages, literatures, and linguistics in the College of Arts and Sciences, is renowned as an academic integrity champion in the classroom. She helps students navigate academic integrity situations with ease.

The academic integrity team, which includes two full-time employees, several part-time student panelists, a spring practicum student, and a pool of volunteers, works tirelessly to promote understanding of the University's academic integrity policy and coordinate its administration. They maintain records of all academic integrity cases and create online resources for classroom use, make academic integrity presentations, and are available for consultation about academic integrity standards.

Kate Marzen, the CTLE assistant director of academic expectations, praised the recipients, stating that they go beyond expectations for the department. Marzen also commended Gallagher for mastering the balance between student empathy and policy implementation.

The Centre for Teaching and Learning Excellence (CTLE) has an academic integrity program, which Gallagher and Lisnyczyj have been volunteering for. Gallagher provided comprehensive case submission, faculty interview completion, and faculty panelist service to the academic integrity office. Lisnyczyj, meanwhile, provides valuable feedback from a faculty perspective to the academic integrity team.

The awards were given in recognition of the recipients' efforts in maintaining academic integrity standards and policies across the University. The CTLE could not fulfill its responsibilities without the volunteers involved in the academic integrity program.

Gallagher and Lisnyczyj's work has also extended to improving the academic integrity seminar, faculty reporting forms, and policy violation and sanction classification rubric. They have spearheaded campaigns to share procedural updates and model positive academic integrity collaborations.
