Radio Day - 2025: Event Program in Tomsk (Revised)

Radioboom festival in Tomsk, Russia: A Celebration of Radio and Technology

Every year on May 7th, Russia honors the Day of Radio. This special day commemorates the birthday of Alexander Popov, the Russian scientist who first demonstrated the feasibility of radio communication in 1895. Today, the Day of Radio is not only a professional holiday for workers in the field of communication, radio technology, and journalism, but also an exciting event for students, teachers, and radio enthusiasts.

In Tomsk, the celebrations are organized by the Tomsk State University of Control Systems and Radioelectronics (TUSUR). Over the years, TUSUR has established several intriguing traditions for the Day of Radio.

One of the most noteworthy traditions is the student march, which began in 1986 when radio engineering students took to the streets of Tomsk for a festive parade. Over time, other faculties joined the celebration. In 1988, the students of TUSUR started another tradition—breaking old televisions as a symbol of technological progress. Each year since then, radio engineering students throw old technology out of the sixth dormitory window.

In 2025, TUSUR will hold the traditional Radioboom festival. The event will kick off on May 7th with the Radio Fair. From 12:00 PM to 4:45 PM, various workshops will be available inside the University's Research and Educational Building (Krasnoarmeyskaya Street, 146). Guests can assemble their own radio receiver, learn Morse code, record an audio drama, and even participate in a papercraft master class to create a radio from paper.

At 5:15 PM, the traditional event "Technological Progress" will take place at the sixth dormitory (Lytkina Street, 8). Each year, students drop old technology from the ninth floor of the building in this event, a tradition that began in 1988.

The festival will conclude with a concert at 7:00 PM on the lower terrace of the Lagernoye park, featuring performer Akmal, as well as presentations by TUSUR groups and congratulatory messages from the university, the city, and the region on the occasion of the Day of Radio.

On May 6th, TUSUR will host the Electronics Fest. At 1:30 PM, students will participate in a student-led quiz entitled "How I Met My Dream Job." For 8th to 11th grade students, a career orientation game titled "Which Engineer Am I?" will take place at 3:00 PM in the PISh TUSUR (Vereshinina Street, 47).
