Police in Odisha are investigating the death of a 18-year-old Nepalese student at KIIT from every possible angle.

Check out the key points in a snap! This 18-year-old Nepalese student, studying Computer Science, was found deceased in her dorm room at Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), Odisha on Thursday evening. The cause of death is suspected to be suicide, yet the circumstances remain unclear.

In the wake of this tragic event, the Odisha Police has taken charge of the investigation, promising a thorough and open-ended examination. This scrutiny includes her electronic communications, such as chats, phone calls, and emails on her mobile phone and laptop.

The family, visibly distraught, arrived at the university on Friday evening to claim the body. Her father mentioned that he last spoke to her at 3 pm and she seemed fine. The Nepal government is in touch with Indian diplomats to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the student's death.

This isn't the first unfortunate incident at KIIT University. Less than three months ago, another Nepali student studying Computer Science took her life following alleged blackmail by a classmate and racial remarks from some faculty members. The suspected student, Advik Shrivastava, was later apprehended by the Bhubaneswar police. The university faced criticism for its handling of the case, ultimately leading to intervene by the external affairs ministry, which in turn prompted an apology from the university.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), which probed the previous case, attributed the student's death to sexual harassment by the accused and the university's negligent response, which violated the student's right to equality and right to live with dignity.

Recently, the UGC has constituted a fact-finding committee to better understand the circumstances of the two consecutive student suicides at KIIT University. Headed by Prof. Nageshwar Rao, former Vice-Chancellor of IGNOU, the committee is tasked with evaluating academic pressures, institutional policies, grievance redressal mechanisms, and student support structures. However, their findings and recommendations for improvements are yet to be announced.

Stay tuned for further updates on this heartbreaking case and the UGC's proceedings.
