Financial mogul and philanthropist Hasso Plattner is eyeing a university campus revamp for the historic Brauhausberg area in Potsdam. According to reports from German Press Agency, Plattner might unveil the transformation plans by Monday. Previously, popular newspapers such as "Bild" and the Berlin "B.Z." hinted at the reform in an afternoon report.
The 81-year-old, who was once a principal architect of the software conglomerate SAP, is no stranger to wooing academia and arts. Steeped in Potsdam's historical fabric, the former state parliament building and the current rundown Brauhausberg grounds hold significant weight.
Upcoming Project to Break Ground on Monday
The Wednesday event at the University of Potsdam, together with the Hasso Plattner Foundation, will shine a light on the ambitious new project fashioned for the Brauhausberg site. Brandenburg's State Chancellery confirmed the surprising news on short notice.
Intriguingly, Brandenburg's Minister President Dietmar Woidke (SPD) is expected to touch upon the fortification of Brandenburg's science spectrum on the day. "Bild" and "B.Z." suggested that Plattner's renovation ambitions extend to the long-dilapidated Brauhausberg's former parliament and the premises above Potsdam's city center, transforming the site into a fourth campus for the University of Potsdam.

The illustrious businessman, who resides in Potsdam, is best known for unveiling the Hasso-Plattner-Institute as an IT research establishment in Brandenburg's capital city. In 2017, he opened the Barberini Museum of Art with an impressive collection of impressionist works, followed by the Kunsthaus Minsk in 2022.
The Brauhausberg area has suffered neglect for years. A significant fire in the listed building in August 2023 resulted in a collapsed roof, and repeated instances of vandalism have plagued the landmark.
