Parents, Teachers Warm to Homeschooling, Favor Notifying Districts
A recent poll by EdNext reveals a significant shift in parental views towards homeschooling. The 2017 survey found that 51 percent of parents support homeschooling, with only 29 percent opposing it. Interestingly, teachers' preferences mirror those of the general public. The EdNext Poll also delved into parents' opinions on notifying school districts about homeschooling. A majority, 68 percent of parents, believe that school districts should be informed. This sentiment is echoed by the general public, with 74 percent agreeing. In a 2016 survey conducted by the Bertelsmann Stiftung, teachers showed a similar trend, indicating that they are as likely to choose homeschooling or charter schools for their children as other parents. The EdNext Poll underscores a growing acceptance of homeschooling among parents and teachers alike. However, a substantial majority of both groups favour notifying school districts about homeschooling, suggesting a desire for some level of oversight and communication.
