Pakistan and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) agree on a five-year strategy to enhance nuclear collaboration in sectors such as food, healthcare, and energy.
Pakistan and IAEA Sign Five-Year Cooperation Plan to Boost Sustainable Development
Pakistan and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have signed a new five-year cooperation plan, named the 2026-31 Country Programme Framework (CPF). The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna by IAEA Deputy Director General, Hua Liu, and Dr. Raja Ali Raza Anwar, Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission.
The CPF reaffirms Pakistan's commitment to the peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology. According to Dr. Anwar, with the support of the IAEA, Pakistan will continue to use nuclear science to address food security, improve health care, strengthen energy security, and safeguard the environment.
The priorities identified in the CPF include boosting crop yields, improving food safety, expanding cancer treatment, strengthening nuclear safety, and increasing climate resilience. Pakistan will use isotope hydrology to monitor water resources and counter climate change.
Pakistan's nuclear power facilities currently supply over 18 percent of its electricity, with six operating plants and one under construction. The CPF will focus on plant life management and safe decommissioning of nuclear power facilities.
Pakistan will also advance nuclear medicine and radiopharmaceuticals to meet rising cancer and chronic disease needs. The CPF aims to use nuclear science to support Pakistan's development agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The CPF covers three IAEA technical cooperation cycles and emphasizes gender equality. It commits to training more women in nuclear sciences, as part of its efforts to promote equal opportunities in the field.
IAEA Deputy Director General, Hua Liu, described the agreement as a "shared vision for sustainable development through peaceful nuclear cooperation." Dr. Anwar added that the signing of the CPF is a significant step towards achieving Pakistan's development goals and strengthening its partnership with the IAEA.
