Open Call for Submissions: Language Awards for Latvia and Estonia

The Language Promotion Award is set to return for its sixteenth edition, celebrating achievements in promoting the Latvian and Estonian languages in both countries. The prestigious award, jointly funded by Latvia and Estonia, is worth EUR 5,000.

Nominations for the award can come from various sectors, including translators, linguists, journalists, language teachers, and organisers of language learning programs. Notably, nominations can also be submitted for translations of fiction or academic papers, research, language learning projects, journalistic programmes, articles, or broadcasts on language promotion in either Estonia or Latvia.

Both individuals and institutions are eligible for nomination. Past winners of the award include Maima Grīnberga, Guntars Godiņš, Kalev Kalkun, Margus Konnula alias Contra, Valts Ernštreits, Livia Viitol, Rūta Karma, Ilze Tālberga, Lembit Vaba, Daila Ozola, Hea Lugu Publishers, and Karl Pajusalu.

The jury for the award consists of representatives from the foreign ministries of both countries and language and literature experts. The winner will be announced by the foreign ministers of Estonia and Latvia.

The Language Promotion Award aims to recognise excellence in promoting the Latvian language in Estonia and the Estonian language in Latvia. By doing so, it encourages further collaboration and understanding between the two nations, fostering a strong bond rooted in shared linguistic heritage.

The Language Promotion Award, a joint endeavor by Latvia and Estonia, values efforts in multiple media sectors, such as journalism, education-and-self-development, and broadcasts, which contribute to the promotion of the Latvian language in Estonia and vice versa. Notably, achievements in the realm of lifestyle, like translations of fiction or academic papers, are also eligible for this prestigious Euro 5,000 award. Interested parties can submit their nominations via the provided Application Form, with a deadline of 26 May 2025, for achievements made in 2024. This initiative aims to celebrate excellence and cultivate cross-cultural understanding, strengthening the bond between the two nations through a shared appreciation of their respective languages.
