Herman Chavez Named 2022 Marshall Scholar and NISTS Transfer Student Ambassador

Herman Chavez, a student at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), has achieved a significant milestone in his academic journey. In October, he was named a National Institute for the Study of Transfer Students (NISTS) 2022 Transfer Student Ambassador. However, details about his future academic plans as a 2022 Marshall Scholar or the specific degrees he plans to pursue at King's College London are not yet available.

The Marshall Scholarship, one of the most prestigious scholarships offered to American college students, selects approximately 40 students each year based on academic merit, leadership, and ambassadorial potential. The scholarship covers all costs of pursuing a two-year degree at a British university.

Chavez's acceptance as a Marshall Scholar is attributed to his experiences as a transfer student at UCLA. Transferring to UCLA provided him with opportunities that would otherwise have been unachievable.

As a recipient of the Marshall Scholarship, Herman will study for an MSc in Global Affairs and an MMus in Musicology at King's College London. His academic trajectory has been marked by his dedication and passion for music, reflected in his status as an Elaine Krown Klein Fine Arts Scholar.

Throughout his time at UCLA, Herman has received guidance from thesis advisors Cesar Favila (UCLA Musicology), Katherine In-Young Lee (UCLA Musicology), Tamara Levitz (UCLA Musicology/Comparative Literature), and scholarship advisor Rebecca Blustein.

Herman's future aspirations include obtaining a Ph.D. in Musicology and becoming a professor of music at a public institution. His accomplishments bring great honor to The Herb Alpert School of Music, the Humanities Division, and UCLA.

The late Elaine Krown Klein, a long-time supporter of the arts at UCLA, provided philanthropic support that has helped hundreds of students over three decades. Her legacy continues to inspire students like Herman Chavez.

Despite the lack of information about his specific future academic plans at King's College London, Herman's journey as a transfer student at UCLA and his subsequent selection as a Marshall Scholar are testament to his academic merit, leadership, and ambassadorial potential.

Pursuing his passion for education and self-development, Herman Chavez's acceptance as a 2022 Marshall Scholar will further propel his personal growth, as he plans to study for an MSc in Global Affairs and an MMus in Musicology at King's College London. Aiming to obtain a Ph.D. in Musicology and become a professor of music at a public institution, his career development aligns with his aspirations to continue making contributions to his field and inspire future generations.
