Minister advocates for a detailed plan for vaccinating children and adolescents
The federal and state governments are set to convene a vaccination summit in the coming week, with a focus on vaccinating children and adolescents aged 12 and over before the start of the next school year.
Federal Education Minister Anja Karliczek (CDU) is leading the call for this initiative, advocating for a comprehensive vaccination offer for all teaching staff as well as students in the same age group. Teachers are considered particularly at risk in school operations and in some cases still are.
Karliczek believes that vaccinating as many students as possible would help ensure relatively normal school operations after the summer holidays. The vaccination schedule aims to provide vaccination to children and adolescents in the age group of 12 and over before the start of the new school year.
The European Medicines Agency is expected to closely examine the safety and effectiveness of vaccines from Biontech and Moderna for the age group from 12 years. The vaccination schedule for children and adolescents is desired to be established in all federal states soon.
However, it's important to note that ultimately, the decision regarding the vaccination of children and adolescents lies with the parents.
Karliczek is also calling for a comprehensive vaccination offer for all teaching staff by the start of the school year. She wants school operations to resume relatively normally after the summer holidays, and believes that vaccinating as many students and teachers as possible would be beneficial for this.
At the moment, there are no specific current details available regarding the vaccination schedule for students and teachers aged 12 and older across the German federal states according to the Federal Ministry of Education and Research. As more information becomes available, updates will be provided.
