Mexico City's 'México Canta' Finale Aims to Boost National Pride This Sunday
Mexico City is gearing up for the grand finale of 'México Canta', a singing competition akin to 'American Idol', this Sunday. The event will air live from 7 to 9 p.m. local time on Canal Once, Canal 22, Canal 14, and streamed on YouTube. The finale coincides with the 'Viernes muy mexicano' initiative, encouraging consumers to support local, family-run businesses and Mexican products.
The 'Viernes muy mexicano' initiative, launched to strengthen national pride and consumption of local goods, saw its largest turnout in December 2022. On the first day alone, over 23,000 family businesses across Mexico participated. The initiative promotes Mexican products and services every Friday, with the aim of boosting national identity.
The 'México Canta' competition, which does not allow songs glorifying violence or criminal activities, will award record deals to winners based on popular vote and specialist judges' decisions. Finalists will perform at a press conference ahead of the grand finale, which President Claudia Sheinbaum is expected to attend. However, her recent press conference lasted less than an hour and did not address recent violence during a march commemorating the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre.
Tune in this Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. Mexico City time to watch the 'México Canta' grand finale, and remember to support local businesses as part of the 'Viernes muy mexicano' initiative. The initiative and competition aim to foster national pride and identity, with the singing competition offering record deals to winners.
