Medical study locations in Saarland top the charts - Medical studies see lead in Saarland's ranks
In a recent study conducted by the Center for Higher Education Development (CHE) in Gütersloh, it was found that Saarland is one of the frontrunners in providing medical study opportunities relative to its population among German federal states [1].
The study analysed the number of medical study places offered in each federal state and concluded that Saarland has 29 medical study places per 100,000 inhabitants, making it one of the two leaders alongside Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, which offers 26 places per 100,000 inhabitants [1].
For comparison, Berlin offers 17 medical study places per 100,000 inhabitants, Hamburg and Saxony-Anhalt offer 19 each, Hesse 18, and most other federal states are behind Berlin. Bremen and Brandenburg currently do not offer any medical study places at their state universities, with Brandenburg planning to start medical training in winter semester 2026/27 [1].
In the academic year 2024, Saarland admitted 293 first-year students in human medicine, reflecting the state's commitment to addressing the physician shortage overall [1]. This data highlights Saarland's relatively strong position in providing medical study opportunities compared to other German federal states.
