Legendary Critic Shigehiko Hasumi Makes U.S. Debut With Japan Society Series
Renowned Japanese film critic and theorist Shigehiko Hasumi, now 89, is making his U.S. debut with a series at New York's Japan Society. The event, 'Shigehiko Hasumi: Another History of the Movie in America and Japan', runs from October 9 to 18. Hasumi's impact on Japanese cinema is significant, with many prominent filmmakers considering him their mentor.
The series, curated by Hasumi himself, collapses boundaries between American and Japanese cinema. It includes films by international auteurs like Michael Mann, Seijun Suzuki, Kenji Mizoguchi, and Kiyoshi Kurosawa. Notably, it features works by directors Hasumi has connections with, such as Jean-Luc Godard, Pedro Costa, and Wim Wenders. The finale will screen 'John Ford and Throwing - Complete Edition', a montage film co-directed by Hasumi and Sho Miyake, the recent Locarno Golden Leopard winner.
The series also coincides with the English translation publication of Hasumi's book 'Directed by Yasujiro Ozu'. Despite his influence, Hasumi's writings have not been widely accessible in the U.S. until now. Miyake will present his film and discuss Hasumi's fascination with John Ford during the series.
The Japan Society screening series offers a unique opportunity to explore Hasumi's perspective on cinema. His U.S. debut is a significant event for film enthusiasts, providing access to his influential works and thoughts. The series finale, with Miyake's participation, promises to be a highlight of the event.
