Launch of school year with the 'Secure Schools' initiative

Baden-Württemberg, one of the safest states for children on the roads, is taking further steps to ensure the safety of its youngest residents. The state has launched the "Safe School Route" initiative, a joint effort by the Ministry of the Interior, for Digitalization and Communities, the Ministry of Transport, and the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport.

The initiative aims to reduce incidents on school routes, with the ultimate goal of eliminating fatalities and serious injuries (Vision Zero). The "Safe School Route" action includes traffic monitoring, accident prevention, and awareness-raising measures.

In 2024, the police recorded a total of 378 school route incidents, a decrease of nearly 11% from the previous year. The number of lightly injured decreased from 391 to 339, and the number of severely injured decreased from 48 to 35, a decrease of over 27%. Unfortunately, one teenager died on their way to school in 2024, as was the case in 2023.

To further strengthen road safety, police and municipalities will strictly enforce speed limits near schools. The Fahrlehrerverband Baden-Württemberg e.V. (Driving Instructors Association Baden-Württemberg) also supports the initiative.

Parents are encouraged to walk the school route with their children beforehand and choose the safest, not necessarily the shortest, route. Large banners, posters, and actions will raise awareness of the start of school and encourage road users to be considerate and careful.

The school year in Baden-Württemberg begins on September 15, 2025, and over 100,000 first-graders will start school. Deputy Minister-President and Interior Minister Thomas Strobl has appealed for special consideration for the youngest in road traffic.

The "Safe School Route" action is conducted in collaboration with the email Press Office of the Ministry of the Interior, for Digitalization and Communities, and the Citizen Representative can be contacted via the contact form on their website. The Baden-Württemberg Police, the Center for School Quality and Teacher Training, the Road Safety Associations, cities, municipalities, and the partners of the state-wide traffic safety campaign "BE CAREFUL IN TRAFFIC" also support the initiative.

The police will accompany the start of school in Baden-Württemberg, ensuring a safe and smooth start to the school year for all students. The "Safe School Route" initiative is a significant step towards maintaining Baden-Württemberg's status as one of the safest states for children on the roads.
