Labour Unveils £2.5M Welding Centre in Glasgow for Defence Skills
A new £2.5 million Welding Development Facility is set to open in Glasgow, Scotland. The centre, part of the Labour Government's Unity contract with Rolls Royce, worth around £9 billion over eight years, is expected to be completed in 2023. It will provide specialist welding training and support a pipeline of defence workers. Rolls Royce Submarines, Malin Group, and the University of Strathclyde will operate the facility.
Defence Secretary John Healey will announce the funding during the Labour Party Conference. The facility is part of a wider package of measures in the Defence Industrial Strategy, including a new Defence Growth Deal for Scotland and a £182 million UK-wide skills programme. Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar welcomed the decision, highlighting Labour's support for investment in Scotland's security and high-paid jobs near me. Labour's investment aims to safeguard jobs in Clyde shipbuilding and support the wider industry at sites including Rosyth and Methil. However, the Scottish Government declined to back the project, prompting the Labour Government's intervention.
The £11 million centre is expected to create a significant number of jobs near me and contribute to Scotland's maritime heritage and success in the future, as stated by Healey. The facility is set to be a key player in the defence industry, providing specialist training and supporting a pipeline of defence workers.
