In Stadtwerke park, a unique and educational project has taken shape, funded by the NRW Family Ministry. The "Plastic Waste Memorial" project aims to foster environmental awareness and upcycling among children and young people by creating a tangible, interactive space that highlights the impact of plastic waste and promotes creative reuse.

This memorial, made from plastic waste, transforms discarded materials into art or installations that serve as a reflection on plastic pollution while inspiring participants to think about sustainability and resourcefulness. The project does not involve any advertisements, ensuring a focus on education and environmental responsibility.

The project typically follows a series of strategies to achieve its goals. It raises awareness about plastic pollution by presenting visible evidence of waste accumulating in everyday environments. It encourages participation by involving children and young people in collecting, sorting, and repurposing plastics into artistic or practical objects.

Moreover, the project promotes upcycling as a creative and sustainable alternative to disposal, demonstrating how waste can be transformed into valuable products rather than discarded. It also educates about resource conservation through interactive and community-based activities supported by public institutions like the NRW Family Ministry.

Children and young people collected and cleaned waste themselves as part of the project, sensitizing them to the handling of waste and city pollution during a neighborhood walk. The young artists developed initial ideas for the installation together with the artist after cleaning the waste.

The sculpture, installed on the sight barrier of the Stadtwerke park on Kettwiger Street, is intended to encourage passersby to pause and reflect. It serves as a memorial for the issue of plastic waste, and the project's goal was to encourage children and young people to reflect on the issue of plastic waste.

Interestingly, the project is connected to the existing art installation series "Plastic Army" by artist Dirk Krüll. By participating in this project, children and young people learn that they can influence societal problems through their actions, making environmental issues more accessible and encouraging responsible behavior.
