RTI International's International Education Division is currently accepting applications for a full-time Communication Specialist position within their Early Grade Reading Program (EGRP) in Nepal, based in Kathmandu. This role is a unique opportunity for a communications professional to contribute to a USAID-funded program aimed at improving early grade reading in public schools across Nepal.
The Communication Specialist will play a crucial role in developing and implementing communication strategies to support the program's goals. Key responsibilities include producing and disseminating communication materials such as reports, success stories, newsletters, social media content, and press releases. The successful candidate will also coordinate with program staff, partners, and stakeholders to ensure consistent messaging, promote the program’s achievements and lessons learned to local and international audiences, and support knowledge management and documentation efforts.
Applicants should possess a Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Education, Social Sciences, or a related field, with a Master's degree often preferred. Candidates should have several years (usually 3-5+) of experience in communications, preferably in the international development or education sectors. Strong skills in writing, editing, and digital communication tools are essential, along with experience working with media and managing public relations.
Fluency in English is a must, and knowledge of Nepali or local languages is an advantage. Familiarity with education programs, particularly early grade reading or literacy initiatives, is desirable. Proficiency with MS Office and digital communication platforms is also required.
The Communication Specialist will be responsible for the principal writing and editing of all materials related to the program and its progress. This role requires 20% field travel to the program districts. The successful candidate will work closely with the technical team to write success stories, lessons learned, and activity reports. They will also develop and maintain the editorial calendar, conduct interviews, and document and capture the program's activities and progress.
In addition, the Communication Specialist will oversee and manage digital media, traditional media, and web-based communication. They will develop communication tools such as newsletters, pamphlets, and project briefs, and have photography and photo/video editing skills as an advantage. The candidate will also assist in special events planning and execution, write articles on program activities, and collect and compile materials for sharing and submitting to RTI and USAID, including the Development Experience Clearinghouse (DEC).
