Job Applicants Encouraged to Follow Up After Silence or Rejection

Hamburg/Munich – Candidates who believe their job application may have slipped through the cracks could still stand a chance, according to career coach Bastian Hughes. "Even recruiters make mistakes," Hughes, a podcaster for the Career Optimizer, said in a blog post on Xing.

Proactive follow-ups can help job seekers stand out, he suggested. Initiative could potentially explain a lost job offer, as it's possible the position was forgotten or misplaced. Hughes recommends checking in with the employer if you have reason to believe the interview went particularly well and everyone was satisfied.

Similarly, if the waiting period post-interview feels unusually prolonged, HR professionals might be managing multiple positions simultaneously, leading to extensive delays depending on the position's urgency. By actively following up, an applicant could at least receive an update on their application status.

Following rejection, communicating directly with the employer could result in a reconsideration of the candidate's application. Hughes advises following up, even after an unexpected rejection, as sometimes a recruiter may take a second look.

A well-structured resume that highlights relevant skills, experiences, and knowledge can make a strong impression, according to Hughes. If the employer continues their decision, the applicant might obtain more elaborated reasons for the rejection than a generic email. In some cases, they might discover their qualifications align with future roles within the company.

When following up, Hughes recommends demonstrating patience and professionalism by waiting approximately one to two weeks after the application deadline or interview before making inquiries. The follow-up email should be concise, courteous, and express continued interest in the position while seeking updates on the application status. If a rejection has been issued, thank the employer for the opportunity and show willingness to receive feedback for personal development and future prospects.

It's essential to maintain a positive tone and keep an open communication channel with the employer via LinkedIn, if appropriate. Simultaneously, continue applying to other job opportunities to increase the chances of securing a position.

Education-and-self-development and career-development are crucial aspects during job-search. Besides sending applications, conducting proactive follow-ups can help job seekers stand out and potentially secure a lost job offer or receive updates on their application status. Even after an unexpected rejection, sending a well-structured and professional follow-up email could lead to a reconsideration of the application, providing valuable feedback for personal development and future prospects.
