Increased Absenteeism Among Bremen's Student Population

In the city of Bremen, the Abitur exams for this year's candidates have been affected by the ongoing Coronavirus crisis. To accommodate students and ensure they can complete their exams, authorities have implemented several measures.

Rescheduled Exam Dates

The official Abitur exams that could not be held as originally scheduled due to school closures have been postponed. New dates have been set later in the spring or early summer, allowing students to complete their exams once schools reopen or when it becomes feasible to safely conduct exams.

Medical Certificates and Illness

If a student is unable to attend their rescheduled exam due to illness, including COVID-19 infections, they are required to submit a medical certificate (ärztliches Attest) to the examination office. This certificate validates the absence and allows the student to participate in a supplementary exam or to arrange alternative provisions, depending on the situation.

Recommendations and Support

The Bremen educational authorities and schools have provided guidance and support to students and parents during this period. This includes clear communication about new exam schedules, health guidelines, and instructions on how to handle absences due to illness. They emphasize flexibility and understanding given the extraordinary circumstances, ensuring fairness in assessment despite the disruptions.

Multiple Exam Dates

Abitur candidates in Bremen are being offered multiple exam dates. The first main exam period is from April 22 to May 7, while an extended exam period is available from May 12 to May 29. Candidates who are ill during the first two exam blocks can make up the exams from June 15 to June 20. Admission to the third exam block from June 15 to June 20 requires a medical certificate.

Claudia Bogedan, Bremen's Senator for Education, recommends the first exam block for Abitur candidates. Approximately 2,470 students in Bremen are currently preparing for their Abitur.

Schools in Bremen have been closed since mid-March, but the Abitur exams in Bremen are spread across multiple dates, including from April 22 to May 29 and from June 15 to June 20. Abitur candidates who are ill during the third exam block from June 15 to June 20 must provide a medical certificate.

These measures aim to ensure that students can complete their Abitur with as little disadvantage as possible while maintaining health and safety standards.

Other education-and-self-development avenues have been encouraged for students in Bremen during the school closures, such as online learning resources or personal study aids, to facilitate continued learning.

For those Abitur candidates who miss their exams due to unavoidable circumstances like illness, supplementary learning materials and practice tests are made available by Bremen schools to aid in their self-study and catch up on missed topics.
