"Ignorance Prevailed"
In the Opinion section, we welcome the voice of French novelist Emma Becker, a writer who is anything but conventional. Her latest piece, penned in the wake of a tragic event, is a poignant tribute to a man she admired for his passion for discussions and debates – Charlie Kirk.
Kirk, a brilliant individual known for his sharp wit, was a champion of critical thinking, often serving as a valuable opponent for those sharpening their arguments. Becker states that those who hated Kirk have lost a valuable ally in this pursuit.
Unfortunately, the contemporary left-wing politics has appointed itself as the language police, equating even the slightest trivial or shocking word with violence. This has led to a widespread prejudice that the right has a monopoly on violence, a prejudice that seems to have manifested in the norm of violence at all demonstrations in France.
Emma Becker's words about Kirk's assassination are beautiful and brilliant, a testament to the impact he had on those who knew him. His legacy, however, is not limited to France. In the United States, Kirk was fighting an existential threat to democracy by refusing debate in universities, a battle that resonates with many.
Meanwhile, in France, Becker has recently debated about prostitution and its social, political, and cultural implications. Her courage in tackling such a controversial topic reflects her commitment to free and open debate, a commitment shared by Kirk.
Elsewhere, incidents of violence continue to mar the political landscape. Hundreds of sites across Europe were vandalized by Palestine supporters, disrupting the last stage of the Tour of Spain. In the United States, an American undergraduate student in three considers violence a legitimate means of silencing a political opponent.
In the midst of this, Erika Kirk, Charlie Kirk's widow, is ultra-mediatized, militant, and determined to carry on the ideological fight she shared with her late husband. She, like Becker, stands as a beacon of hope for those who believe in the power of debate and the importance of free speech.
In the face of such adversity, it is crucial to remember the words of Guillaume Erner, who dared to say, "it is not possible to be 'Charlie' only for one's own 'Charlie'". Let us strive to uphold the values of free speech, critical thinking, and open debate, in memory of Charlie Kirk and all those who have fought for these ideals.
