Grieving Students Seek Clarification Following Aircraft Accident that Transformed Bangladesh School into a Fatal Trap
In a heart-wrenching incident, a Bangladesh Air Force jet crashed into the Milestone School and College in Dhaka on Monday, claiming at least 31 lives, including 25 students and a teacher, and leaving over 165 others injured. The incident, the deadliest aviation accident in recent memory in Bangladesh, has caused national mourning across the country.
The FT-7 jet was on a routine training mission when it suffered a mid-air mechanical fault, leading to the catastrophic crash. The crash site is still being worked on by police and air force personnel to retrieve parts of the crashed plane.
Among the victims was nine-year-old Zunayet Hasan, a student in Class 3, who was described by his grandfather as wise beyond his years. His family rushed to the school after hearing of the crash and were able to find his older brother safe. Tragically, Zunayet did not survive his injuries and was put on life support in the burns unit, where he later passed away. His parents are inconsolable following his death.
The identities of those killed are still being verified, but many of the injured have severe burns. Most of the injured at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital's burns unit are children under the age of 12. On Tuesday, hundreds of students gathered outside the Milestone School and College in Dhaka, expressing their grief and shock.
Some students believe the death toll may be higher than officially released. The Bangladesh Air Force has expressed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and promised a thorough investigation into the incident.
The F-7 BGI, the final and most advanced variant in China's Chengdu J-7/F-7 aircraft family, was delivered to Bangladesh in 2013 as part of a contract signed in 2011 for 16 aircraft. The pilot of the crashed jet was Flight Lieutenant Towkir Islam.
The incident has sparked widespread concern and calls for improved safety measures in the country's aviation sector. As the nation mourns the loss of lives, prayers and support pour in for the affected families and the injured.
