Graduate numbers in higher education slightly surge

In the academic year 2024, a total of 511,600 students and graduates completed their studies at German higher education institutions, marking a 1.9% increase compared to the previous year, with nearly 10,000 more students.

The majority of exams in the academic year 2024 led to a bachelor's degree, with the number of bachelor's degrees increasing by 0.8% to 245,600. The number of master's degrees also followed suit, increasing by 1.9% to 149,300.

In the realm of doctorates, a total of 28,200 were completed, representing a 6% increase from the previous year. Of these, 7,800 were traditional university of applied sciences degrees, while 31,000 were state examinations outside of teaching. Interestingly, the share of doctorates in the fields of art studies and art education relative to the total graduation rate in these fields is not publicly available as of now. The remaining 6% of degrees were distributed among fields such as sports, forestry, or art sciences.

Approximately 25% of graduates completed degrees in engineering, while around 41% of the degrees awarded were in the fields of law, economics, and social sciences. In the field of medicine, 7% of degrees were awarded.

Regarding teaching degrees, the figures provided do not specify the number awarded in 2024. However, it is known that 10,400 state examination degrees for teaching were awarded, and 19,100 were bachelor's degrees. Additionally, 20,200 master's degrees were completed as part of teaching qualifications.

The total number of master's and state examination degrees that qualify for teaching increased by 5% from the previous year, while 49,700 teaching degrees were completed in 2024, according to the Federal Statistical Office. A significant portion of these, 49,700 teaching degrees, were completed in 2024.

These statistics do not include teaching degrees. It's worth noting that this is an essential aspect of the German education system that warrants further investigation.
