Unleashing German Fluency Across Romania: €500,000 Boost for Educators

Kickstarting from April 30, 2025, Germany is doling out a financial infusion of EUR 495,000 to strengthen German-language education in Romania. This move is a testament to its unwavering dedication to fostering bilingual education and strengthening cultural connections.

The mission behind this project is to nurture the ongoing learning of the German language among Romanian students at a native level. This will be achieved through consistent professional development for German-speaking teachers and the creation of modern learning materials. Furthermore, the project aims to inspire young German speakers to consider a teaching career.

Last Wednesday, the German ambassador, Dr. Peer Gebauer, and Klaus-Harald Sifft, the general director of the Saxonia Foundation, inked the funding agreement at the German Embassy in Bucharest. Crossing the nation, this project will be implemented by the Saxonia Foundation based in Râșnov.

A whopping 960 teachers and educators stand to gain from this investment, ensuring top-notch education in the German language.

As Dr. Peer Gebauer expressed, "I am thrilled that even in this milestone year, marking 145 years of Romanian-German diplomatic relations, we can monetarily support German-language education in Romania. This significant project serves as an essential flagship for promoting the German language, supporting our minority, and fostering mutual understanding."

Approximately 22,000 children and students in Romania benefit from German-language education as their mother tongue.

Klaus-Harald Sifft, the general director of the Saxonia Foundation, acknowledged, "Since 2015, Germany has been bankrolling this indispensable project for our minority. It holds particular significance for enriching German-language education in Romania. Schools that educate in German as a mother tongue are invaluable for our minority and are highly sought after, even among the Romanian-speaking populace."
