Following the sad event, 'Unicycling Unicorn' journeys over 1,000 miles along the Continental Divide Trail.

In a remarkable feat of endurance and resilience, 46-year-old Jamey Mossengren, a unicyclist from Minnesota, has completed a 1,000-mile journey on the Continental Divide Trail (CDT). This gruelling trek through the Rocky Mountains, spanning from New Mexico to Glacier National Park, took Mossengren two months to complete.

Mountain unicycling, a niche sport with roots dating back to the late 1990s, gained popularity thanks to Canadian athlete Kris Holm. Mossengren rode a Kris Holm Unicycle, the go-to brand in the sport, for most of his journey. However, for the final 100 miles, he used a backup unicycle due to worn-out bearings on his primary one.

Mossengren's journey was not just a test of physical endurance. He was also seeking solace in nature to help him process the deep grief he felt following the loss of his sister, who took her own life in January 2023. To cope, he devised a "seven-wheel strategy" involving a Sprinter van, moped, and his unicycle.

During his journey, Mossengren offered spaghetti dinners and cocktails to hikers at several trailheads, providing a much-needed respite for weary travellers. After completing his journey, he donated $1,000 to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Mossengren's journey was not without its challenges. He cancelled several summer gigs due to his grief and difficulty in making others happy when he wasn't happy himself. However, he feels that spending time in nature, such as his 2-month journey on the CDT, can help process grief and promote healing.

Now, Mossengren is performing as the "Unicycling Unicorn" in Boston at King Richard's Faire for the next month. He encourages others to make a donation to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and to seek help if needed.

Kris Holm, the Canadian athlete credited with pioneering the sport of mountain unicycling, developed the first off-road unicycle specifically for riding mountain bike trails in the late 1990s. His brand, "Kris Holm Unicycles," is now the leading name in the sport.

Mossengren's inspiring journey serves as a testament to the power of resilience, the healing power of nature, and the importance of seeking help when needed.
