Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost Mission 1 Extended by NASA for More Lunar Data

Firefly Aerospace, a versatile space company, has been selected by NASA to extend its Blue Ghost Mission 1. The $10 million contract addendum will gather more scientific and operational data from the successful lunar landing.

Firefly Aerospace, known for its launch, landing, and in-space operations, has a diverse portfolio. It offers small- to medium-lift rockets, lunar landers, and orbital vehicles, designed for efficiency from low Earth orbit to lunar destinations and beyond.

The extended mission, part of NASA's Commercial Lunar Payload Services initiative, will collect additional data. This includes communication metrics, propulsion details, lander performance metrics, and extra payload science information. The lander will endure extreme temperatures, from 230°F at lunar noon to -275°F during a solar eclipse. The mission will capture unique observations, such as a solar eclipse and sunrise to sunset cycles, over 14 days on the lunar surface.

Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost Mission 1 extension will gather nearly 120 gigabytes of data, exceeding the original contract's scope. This includes images taken during the lander's journey to the Moon and over 14 days of on-surface operations. The mission aims to acquire extra science and operational data from the successful commercial lunar landing, furthering our understanding of the Moon.
