Farmer Obtains EU Support to Enhance the Tech-driven Agriculture Sector in Ghana's Northern Region
The European Union's AgriFI initiative has invested $2.5 million in Ghanaian agritech startup, Complete Farmer. This investment is set to transform rural development and boost the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in northern Ghana.
Complete Farmer, a digital platform that streamlines agricultural trade, is using the funds to construct six rural fulfillment centers across five northern regions. These centers will serve as essential hubs for storage, quality assurance, and post-harvest handling.
The new centers aim to address the infrastructure gaps that have long hindered farmers' access to markets and inputs. For smallholder farmers, this means improved access to modern farming inputs, technical advice, better market linkages, and enhanced agricultural productivity.
The two main services offered by Complete Farmer—CF Grower and CF Buyer—will be integral to this transformation. CF Grower provides smallholder farmers with data-driven farming guidelines and access to input suppliers, while CF Buyer connects global commodity buyers to traceable, export-quality produce.
The investment targets over 5,000 farmers initially, with ambitions to extend services to 50,000 farmers by 2028, in line with the AgriFI Ghana Country Window’s goal of inclusive rural development.
This investment is not just about supporting a single startup. EU officials note that it uplifts entire farming communities by providing better access to quality inputs, agronomic expertise, and dependable market connections. This leads to more efficient farm operations, increased yields, and higher incomes, contributing to the broader development agenda in northern Ghana.
In 2023, Complete Farmer secured $10.4 million in pre-Series A capital. The latest funding complements Complete Farmer's growth trajectory, positioning the startup to drive large-scale agricultural transformation. Complete Farmer's approach integrates digital innovation with physical infrastructure, aiming to enhance aggregation, quality assurance, and logistics services for smallholder farmers.
With this investment, the EU-backed AgriFI initiative is fostering rural development by strengthening agricultural infrastructure and empowering smallholder farmers with technology, market access, and improved services, thereby enhancing livelihoods and resilience in underserved northern Ghanaian regions.
